Jean-Paul Marsman is a Dutch artist. Marsman is one of the remarkable painters in Holland. He often visits New York: the city is one of his greatest inspiration. Heavy and full. Life is intense. Everything happens everywhere. People live on more levels than ever. Numerous apparent contradictions live within and around us. At the same time we can be a biker and a member of a nature conservation organization. We are all looking for spirituality, but we ‘swap’ ourselves in the current, fast and screaming mass media.
You also encounter those contradictions on the canvases of Jean-Paul Marsman. That splashes off his paintings. The bright colors and recognizable forms are grand, cartoonish and grotesque. The image is an experience, intense and full. A positive ‘smile’ in a chaotic society. Is there a message in his work? Of course, but above all the challenge to look at the way we live, from his smiling perspective. A dialogue with the viewer. He sets the tone and the viewer fills in his story. A conversation or a discussion.
