Wouter Stips (Wassenaar, 1944) is a Dutch artist. After studying in the 1960s, he worked on various visual forms and applied arts at the Academy for Visual Arts in Rotterdam. He exhibited with graphics and paintings, made animated films in Prague, puppets in Paris, wrote and directed theater performances and published various books and theater pieces. From 1980 onwards he focused on writing, directing and developing television programs, including theater documentaries, drama and comedy series. After 15 intense television years in 1995, he decided to return to his old love, painting.
He paints what he would like to dream of himself; landscapes and performances in which people and animals meet, play with each other, not hindered by any restriction whatsoever. They are ideas and thoughts that he shapes, it is like poetry, but with colors, surfaces and lines. A work is only good if he is surprised by it himself. A situation that he paints is always unique. It is a snapshot, a still from a dream. Patches of thoughts that meet each other in a miraculous way. In addition, music is always an important source of inspiration.
