Emiliana Cordaro (Maarssen, 1967) studied at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht. Emiliana makes impressionist oil paintings of landscapes. She finds her inspiration in the landscapes, cities and villages she visits during her travels. From small Italian villages to the large European peatlands and everything in between.
In her work, the atmosphere of the landscape is much more important than the precise representation of reality. She transforms the landscape into a composition of shapes, lines, colors and contrasts. By using bright pigments she creates vibrant colors that are reminiscent of the later work of William Turner. By modeling paint and pigment in layers as if it were clay, she models highly atmospheric and sometimes transparent images that bring the original landscape to life. The richly applied paint and pigments result in a thick layered painting with great depth and texture that, like a fine wine, takes time to fully appreciate. Although the work is clearly modern, it still has a classic feel, partly thanks to the beautiful ‘Dutch skies’.
